Spicy Bangers and Mash!

Bangers and Mash – Kicked up a little. OK, a lot!

This is not “traditional” bangers and mash. And in truth, it’s not meant to be. Not because I don’t love the traditional version, it’s just because I happen to pick up a great deal on Jalapeno Cheddar sausage from the butcher and figured, what the hell? Why not, right? How can you go wrong with fresh sausage and mashed potatoes?!

This meal was a big hit with my husband. He loves spicy food. But, it was too hot for the kids. Still, a fantastic dish to share with all your futbol (or football) friends while watching a match and yelling at the tele, no? Serve with an ice cold beer and enjoy. The ultimate in comfort food, hands down!

1/4 – 1/2 cup milk, as needed – $.20
2 Tbsp butter – $.25

salt and pepper to taste – pantry
1 tsp garlic powder – pantry
1 1/2 to 1 3/4 cups water (as needed for packaged gravy instructions
1 onion, sliced – $.35

COST: $6.27

Boil potatoes in salted water till tender but somewhat firm, about 13-15 minutes. Drain and mash. Add 1 Tbsp butter, milk, garlic powder and cream cheese. Season with salt and pepper and set aside.

In a large skillet, cook sausage until nicely browned and heated through. Remove from pan, and set aside. Add remaining butter to the pan and saute sliced onions over medium heat until clear and tender.

When onions are cooked, sprinkle gravy mix on onions, stir, then add water as directed and whisk as you bring to boil. Simmer, stirring constantly, to form a thick gravy.

Add sausage back to gravy and serve hot over your creamy mashed potatoes.

Since this dish has a southwestern or Mexican flair to it, why not serve with calabacitas ($2.39)? Such a tasty summer dish. With squash and corn abound, it’s perfect!

NOTE: If this recipe for calabacitas is too spicy for you, just leave out the serrano or substitute with red or green bell pepper.

GRAND TOTAL: $8.66
