Fresh Strawberries, dipped in Chocolate!

OK. Not only was this dessert perfect for Valentine’s weekend, it’s so easy, my 7 year old did it! And yes, all for under $5 bucks!

Chocolate covered Strawberries:

1 pint strawberries, fresh – $2.50
8 oz chocolate chips – $1.25
1 Tbsp vegetable shortening – $.20

COST: $3.95

Clean strawberries and cut off tops. Set aside to dry on paper towels. Place chocolate chips in sauce pan and heat on the lowest setting possible. Stir constantly. When melted, add in 1 level Tbsp shortening and continue stirring until mixed and melted. Making sure strawberries are completely dry, hand dip each one and place on wax paper to harden.

These are perfect all by themselves. But….if you want to kick it up and add some flair. Well, you can always make some simple red velvet cupcakes and add the strawberries to the top. This was my daughters suggestion!  And, it only added $1.

We used a prepared red velvet cupcake mix from Walmart, on clearance for $.50 cents. Add oil and egg and maybe that’s another $.50 cents. So, for under $5 bucks, you have a fabulous and very tasty  Valentine’s treat!

GRAND TOTAL: $4.95
